Little Trouble Girls is a sensual and intimate coming-of-age drama about sexual awakening and Catholic shame. The film is the impressive directorial debut of Urška Djukić.
Introverted 16-year-old Lucia (Jara Sofija Ostan) joins the girls' choir at her Catholic school, where she becomes friends with Ana-Maria (Mina Švajger). The choir travels to a monastery in the countryside to rehearse. Before long, one of the construction workers restoring the monastery sparks Lucia's interest. This puts her friendship with Ana-Maria and the other girls to the test. The unfamiliar surroundings and her awakening sexuality throw Lucia off balance and put the choir under strain.
Little Trouble Girls received the FIPRESCI Award at the Berlin Film Festival and won Best Cinematography at the Tribeca Film Festival. The Guardian gave the film 5 stars, and Variety wrote: "A quiet hothouse of youthful desires, mean-girl tensions and hovering Catholic guilt."
