An inventive and timely drama by director Ilker Çatak (Das Lehrerzimmer). Although the story is set in Turkey, Berlin (as Ankara) and Hamburg (as Istanbul) provide the backdrop for a world of powerlessness, corruption and state coercion.
The marriage of acclaimed actress Derya and director and teacher Aziz is put under pressure after they lose their jobs. They move to Istanbul to live with Aziz’s parents and must rebuild their lives together with their thirteen-year-old daughter. Derya receives an attractive offer, while Aziz finds a job. But is there still room for their principles and the freedom to speak their minds?
Yellow Letters won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. By using Germany as the setting, Çatak shows that (self-)censorship does not stop at the border.
